North Belton boy’s basketball takes three of four from Cove Lee

The North Belton Middle School Tigers hosted Copperas Cove S.C. Lee Middle School Thursday night in the first game night following the Christmas break.

Under the watchful eye of Belton head basketball coach Trovocie Jackson, who was in attendance, the North Tigers did not disappoint.

In the 7th grade B game, the Tigers spotted Lee an 8-3 lead in the middle of the first quarter outscoring Lee the rest of the game 30-2 in a 33-10 win.

Lee led 9-4 at the end of the first quarter, North turned the tables and led 14-9 at halftime. North led 20-10 at the end of the third quarter and shut out Lee in the fourth quarter 13-0.

In the 7th grade A game, TJ Johnson scored 12 of his game-high 23 points in the first quarter as North cruised to a 53-19 win over Lee.

Johnson and Seth Morgan assisted each other on several fast breaks, with Morgan’s six of his 14 points in the opening quarter. North led 22-3 at the end of the first period.

Morgan scored six of the Tigers’ 15 points in the second quarter, as North led 37-7 at halftime.

Johnson collected seven of North’s 10 points in the third quarter, as the Tigers led 47-12 at the end of the third quarter.

Lee outscored North in the fourth quarter 7-6, but those points came late in the game.

In the 8th grade B game, North jumped out to a quick lead and held on to double up Lee, 32-16.

The Tigers held Lee to just one field goal in the opening six minutes to lead 10-2. Each team collected seven points and North held the lead at the half, 17-9.

Neither team shot well in the third quarter, with the Tigers outscoring Lee 6-4 and holding a 23-13 advantage going into the fourth quarter. North outscored Lee 9-3 over the final six minutes for the 16-point win.

In the 8th grade A game, the Tigers fought back from two 11-point deficits and tied the game late in regulation, but lost to Lee in overtime, 60-54.

Down 11-0 to start the game, North Belton went on an eight-point run over a 1:15 span. The Tigers trailed 21-11 when Lee finished the quarter on a 10-3 run.

North closed the gap with a 15-9 second quarter, bringing the score to 30-26 in favor of Lee at the end of the first half.

Both teams shot well in the third quarter, with Lee outscoring North 12-11 and retaining a 42-37 lead going into the fourth quarter.

North took a 52-50 lead with just a minute to play in regulation before a Lee desperation heave in the final 30 seconds dropped in. Both teams had opportunities in the final moments, but nothing came of the chances.

In overtime, Lee scored the first four points before an in-paint drive by Thomas Bowman was banked off the glass and in to make the score 56-54. Lee scored the final four points to foil North’s comeback attempt.

Kayden Downs led all scorers with 30 points for the Tigers, who take on.

The Tigers will return to league play on Monday night as they travel to Bonham to take on the Bulldogs.
