The Belton Tigers took advantage of hot shooting in the first quarter and good defense throughout the game in their defeat of San Angelo Central 60-55 at Tiger Gym on Tuesday.

The Tigers never trailed in the game. Kiron Griffin, Jr., Jarian Kerley, Elijah Eddings, Carson Hammond and Dontori Lott, Belton’s starting five, scored 20 of the team’s 22 points in the first quarter to build an 11-point lead by the end of the frame, 22-11.

Kerley, Hammond, Lott, Griffin and Gavin Haines kept the pressure on in the second quarter, as the Tigers led 34-32 at halftime.

The Tigers led by as many as 15 points in third quarter before the Bobcats closed the quarter on a 5-0 run. Belton led 45-35 going into the fourth quarter.

Durryell Taylor had 12 points and Ryan Clark sank two three-pointers in the final quarter for the Bobcats in a final push to tie the game. Timely baskets and free throw conversions by Lott, Hammond and Griffin kept Central at-arms length the rest of the game.

Hammond had 16 points to lead the Tigers (9-14, 1-3 District 8-6A). Dontori Lott had 14 points, Jarian Kerley added 12 points and Griffin poured in 10 points.

Taylor led all scorers with 21 points for Central.
