South Belton girl’s basketball battled Bonham in three-game series

The South Belton Middle School girl’s basketball teams hosted the Bonham Middle School Lady Bulldogs at SBMS Gym on Thursday evening.

In the 8th grade game, the Lady Tigers built a first-half lead. But the tenacious Lady Bulldogs’ defense prevailed by holding Lady Tigers to three field goals in the second half. Bonham won the game 52-34.

South led 12-4 after the first quarter, thanks to a late 8-0 run. Bonham held South to one field goal in the second quarter and sank five of their own. The Lady Tigers led at the half, 17-14.

An 18-5 third quarter for the Lady Bulldogs gave Bonham a 32-22 advantage at the start of the fourth quarter. South was outscored 20-12 in the final quarter, despite the team shooting 8-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Katelyn Chrisman was 10-of-15 from the free-throw line, leading the Lady Tigers with 16 points and Nylah Modeste scored 12 points. South was 15-of-28 at the charity stripe.

Bonham went to the line twice in the game, missing both attempts.

The 7th grade B game was a defensive battle, with plenty of steals and turnovers. South Belton hung on to win the game, 11-6.

Izzy Velasquez, Lauren Pogue and Emma Andrews scored in the first quarter for South and the team shut out Bonham in the opening seven minutes.

Velasquez scored the lone points in the second quarter for the Lady Tigers, as South led 9-3 at the half.

Liliah Tellez scored the lone basket in the third quarter for South, as they took an 11-5 advantage in the fourth quarter. Bonham scored the lone point in the final quarter.

Velasquez led all scorers with six points for South Belton.

In the 7th grade A game, Kylie Blomquist scored in each quarter for South Belton. But the offensive pressure of the Lady Bulldogs forced multiple Lady Tiger turnovers, as Bonham pulled out a 32-14 win.

Bonham led 10-2 after the first quarter, 18-6 at the half and 26-12 at the end of the third quarter.

Blomquist scored eight points for South Belton. Esper Moreno scored four points and Nikki Wade added two points for the Lady Tigers
