Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and the second most common cancer overall. In 2015, an estimated 231,840 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. alone.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you noticed during October many sports teams will wear some form of pink on their uniforms or in some form or fashion, to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many great organizations help fund research to continue to search for a cure, provide comprehensive support, help with early detection and prevention, among other services.
Belton High School does their part supporting through the sale of Think Pink Go Red shirts. Barry Harper and Adam Bomb Graphics help support this endeavor. The Program was established by Elayne Kaufman. Every year the Cheerleaders, sale Think Pink Go Red shirts for $10. All proceeds go to help fund research at the Cancer Institute at Baylor Scott and White. To date this program has donated $42,539.25. They still have some shirts left to sale. They will be available at the Volleyball game tonight, as well as the football game friday night against Killeen.
The Belton High School football program would like to do the same. Unfortunately, the wearing of pink gloves, socks, wristbands, etc. has become more of a fashion trend during the month than about supporting worthy programs. As a result, one game for each Belton Football team will be designated as the Pink Out game. Athletes are allowed to wear additional pink items as part of the uniform such as, gloves, wristbands, socks, cleats, shoe laces, chin straps, etc. However, for each item an athlete decides to wear to show his support, he will have to donated $5 per item. That money will go to the Cancer Institute at Baylor Scott and White to help fund research and support. The athletes can also go out into the community and get community members to sponsor the $5 for the items for their Pink Out gear. We support Breast Cancer Awareness Month and want to do our part. We want it to be more than a fashion statement – we want it to be about awareness and providing donations to help support the research to help find a cure.
