Multiple Teams · Senior Leadership and Late FT’s Key to Finish Over Leander

In last night’s game Non Conference Game, the Belton High School Boy’s Basketball team defeated the Leander Lions 62 – 59 advancing their record to 8-2.

The contest started in the favor of the Tigers as they controlled the tempo with their pressure system style of defense and executed on offense versus the Lion’s 1-3-1 half court zone. This led to an early lead in the 1st quarter of 18-6 as Seniors: Jarian Kerley and Kiron Griffin Jr. both chipped in 5 points in the quarter as Senior Dontori Lott contributed 6 points of his own.

The 2nd Quarter was one that was filled with adjustments by the Lions as they came out swinging and outscored the Tigers in the quarter 20 to 15 and ended the quarter on a 7-0 run cutting into the Tigers lead at half, 33 to 26. Turnovers and a brief scoring drought largely contributed to the lackluster 2nd Quarter by the Tigers.

At the start of the 3rd Quarter the Lions continued their attack and hot shooting to eventually take a lead versus the Tigers and fouls quickly mounted for the Tigers leaving Senior Kiron Griffin Jr. on the bench for much of the 3rd Quarter. The slack was picked up by key bench play of Andrew Linklater, Jordan Ellis and Freshman, Kayden Downs each of them scored during the period, but it was Dontori Lott’s aggressiveness that kept the game tight as he scored 8 of his game high 21 points in the period.

With a back and forth 4th Quarter the Tigers pressure started to heat up and clearly started to bother the Lions guards late as they turned the ball over on 3 consecutive trips, all leading to Tiger’s baskets and eventually the lead for good. Griffin’s re-emergence into the 4th Quarter and a pair of clutch FT’s late and the steady defensive presence of Jordan Ellis and Jarian Kerley sealed the victory for the Tigers. Moving the Tigers to 8-2 on the season and going into this weekend’s tournament at Decatur High School – Decatur, TX with some really good energy.

High Scorer’s: Dontori Lott 21 points – Kiron Griffin Jr. 14 points – Jarian Kerley 11 points
