The Belton Tigers were hosted by San Angelo Central Bobcats in San Angelo, TX on Tuesday, hoping to end their district winless drought.
The Tigers were solid defensively and took advantage of some Central early turnovers. The Tigers signature pressure defense was very disruptive early and often as the Tigers defeated Central 64-51, improving their overall record to 12-11 and their district 8-6A record to 1-3.
The Tigers fell behind early in the 1st quarter as the game went back and forth until midway thru the 2nd quarter when Senior, Jordan Ellis erupted for 8 points in the quarter, knocking down two 3 Pointers as fellow Senior, Kiron Griffin Jr. added to Ellis’ barrage with 7 points of his own in the quarter. Belton ended the half up 36-29 and never looked back.
Through this team effort win, the Tigers found their rhythm offensively and were able to take advantage of many offensive opportunities off of turnovers.
Belton (12-11 overall, 1-3 District 8-6A) extended it’s lead in the final quarter, as Griffin Jr. and Dontori Lott asserted their will and accounted for the bulk of the scoring. Central, although very resilient was unable to ever get it any closer than 10 points in the second half as the Tigers won the ballgame by 12 points.
Belton Boy’s leading scorers were: Kiron Griffin Jr. 16 points, Jordan Ellis and Dontori Lott both with 15 points, Jarian Kerley with 7 points and 6 assists, Elijah Eddings 5 points, Andrew Linklater 4 points, and Jay Figueroa with 2 points.
Tigers play host to district 8-6A leader Killeen Ellison on Friday, January 12th at 7:00p at Tiger Gym.
