Girls Varsity Softball · Seven-run opening inning propels Lady Tigers past No. 24 Lake Travis 12-1 in five innings.

The Belton Lady Tigers played their final non-district affair on Saturday afternoon in Lakeway, as they took on the TGCA No. 24-ranked Lake Travis Lady Cavaliers.

Belton combined parlayed four hits and three walks, along with four Lake Travis errors, into seven first-inning runs. The Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Cavs 12-1 in five innings,

Belton moved their record to 25-6-1 on the season, with two district games remaining and a potential play-in seed game against Waco Midway on the horizon. They are currently on a nine-game winning streak.

The Lady Tigers started the ballgame with a single and stolen base by Avery Drake. Madison Ward singled, but was caught in a rundown during a delayed steal that scored Drake to give Belton its first run. With one out, back-to-back walks put Bethany Edwards and Caleigh on second and first respectively. Madison Bartlett singled to load the bases. Izzy Gutierrez smoked a 2-1 pitch off of the glove of Lady Travis first baseman Dylan Roark into right field to score Edwards and Robinson to increase the lead to 3-0. Harley Staton reached base, Nunes reached on an error, Miranda Davila walked, Drake reached on an error and Ward’s two-run single capped the seven-run opening inning.

Madison Cotton started the game in the circle for the Lady Tigers. Kaitlyn Schoonmaker and Jessica Day singled in the first inning, but Cotton picked up two strikeouts in the inning.  Belton moved the needle up to eight in the third inning. Drake pulled a ball down the right field line for a triple and scored on a passed ball.

Cotton got touched up for a run in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back walks and back-to-back singles resulted in an RBI single by Jami Watson, scoring Schoonmaker.

Tubbs came in with one out in the fourth inning and struck out Adele Benny to set up a fielder’s choice by Day to get Belton out the inning before any further damage ensued.

Belton broke the double-digit run mark in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Staton hit her first career home run to the right side of the centerfield batter’s eye to put Belton up 9-1. Nunes walk set up pinch hitter Payton Cook’s RBI triple past the centerfielder. Drake singled home Cook and Ward knocked it Drake to make the score 12-1.

Tubbs induced a two fly outs and a strike to end the game in run-rule fashion.

Drake scored three runs and had three hits. Staton and Nunes each had two runs scored. Belton collected 10 hits and stranded six on base.

Cotton picked up the win, having pitched three and one-thirds innings, allowed one run on six hits, walked two and struck out six. Tubbs pitched one and two-thirds innings, allowed one hit walked one and struck out two.

The Lady Cavaliers had Schoonmaker reach three times, as Lake Travis had seven hits and stranded nine runners on base.

Abbie Biggs took the loss, having gone the distance. She allowed 12 runs on 10 hits, walked five and struck out four.

Belton hosts Killeen Ellison on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Lady Tiger Field.
