On Thursday 1.10.19, NBMS Girl’s Basketball traveled to Bonham Middle School to face the Bulldogs. It was a victorious night as all four teams took home a win. Each team played with vigor and worked hard to secure the win, final scores were; 8A 38-16, 8B 18-8, 7A 24-20, 7B 20-6.
8B started the night off aggressively and built up a 5-0 lead after the first quarter. Raven Dupree found a breakaway layup and added a free throw. Trinity Fly also found a post score to push the lead to 5-0. In the second, North would push the lead with Elana Tucker finding two post scores and Fly would add another put back. Bonham could only capitalize on a pair of free throws as North led at the half, 11-2. In the third, North would have trouble finding the basket as Samantha Grimaldo scored the lone basket in the quarter. Defensively, North contained Bonham and only gave up one score of their own. Heading into the fourth, North led 13-4. In the fourth, both teams would trade baskets with Stevie Blaha and Mary Hayes scoring for North. The lead would remain the same as North would win 17-8. Leading scorers were Tucker and Fly with four points each. Dupree added three points and Blaha, Grimaldo and Hayes each added a basket.
8A finished the night off in winning fashion by completing the four game sweep with the final score of 38-16. On the jump ball, Alina Tavernier would tip the ball the Layloni Watson who found Sydni Cartwright on the back side for a fast break layup five seconds into the game. From there, North would pressure Bonham’s press break and come away with multiple steals. Cartwright would add two more breakaway layups in the quarter and Danica Bingham, Reagan Furney and Tavernier would all find the basket on offense. North led after the first quarter, 14-0. In the second quarter, Bonham would come out pressing and took advantage as they would steal and score three baskets in a span of 15 seconds to cut the lead to 14-6. North would answer back later in the quarter with Bingham, Furney and Tavernier all adding a basket to their totals. Late in the quarter, Madison Lux would rip around a defender and finish the contact layup and add the free throw to complete the and-one. North would lead at halftime, 23-10. Out of the half, North would continue to dominate defensively as Bonham only found one basket in the quarter. Offensively, Elaina Herrera hit a beautiful reversal jumper and Tavernier added a third post score to her totals. A few plays later, Tavernier would pop out from the paint undefended and drain a three pointer. North led after the third, 30-12. In the fourth, Cartwright would find a few more steals and added two more fast break layups to her total. Layloni Watson grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back for her lone score of the night and Furney would end all scoring with a fast break layup late in the quarter. North would win with the final score of 38-16. Leading scorer was Cartwright with 10 points. Tavernier scored nine points, including a three pointer. Danica Bingham and Reagan Furney each added six points. Madison Lux scored three points (1-1 FT) and Elaina Herrera and Layloni Watson each added a basket.
7th Grade A Team’s game against Bonham ended in victory for the Lady Tiger’s. North started the game with an aggressive full court press forcing Bonham to play quickly and turn the ball over. Bonham’s patience and strategy in the first quarter nearly matched North’s transition points with the score eight to six at the end of the first quarter with Macey Weber leading all scorers with four points. Charlee Maddux and Trinity Pearson stepped up offensively for the Tiger’s in the second quarter scoring six points combined but their scoring around the basket was no match for Bonham’s tenacious guard’s who out scored the Tigers eight to six. This left the score tied at halftime, fourteen to fourteen. With a few adjustments at half time, the Tiger’s quickly cranked up the intensity of the game with Ella Wheeless’ aggressive defense leading the way. Macey Weber, Kaleice Cain, and Trinity Pearson scored ten points altogether which gave North a four point lead going into the fourth quarter. North’s tenacious half court defense rattled Bonham’s offense leaving them scoreless in the fourth quarter while Charlee Maddux, Macey Weber, and Victoria Shimabukuro helped the Lady Tiger’s solidify the win scoring four points in the fourth quarter. The leading scorer for the game was Macey Weber with eleven points followed by Charlee Maddux and Trinity Pearson with six. Ella Wheeless led the team in steals with eight. Charlee Maddux led the team in rebounds with eight followed by Pearson bringing down three. With the final score 28 to 20, the Lady Tiger’s are now 4-1 in district play.
7B started off the night of basketball for North. Jasmine Beasley gained control of the jump ball to get it to Emma Jez as she controlled the tip and sent it down for a quick lay-up by Haylee Reeder. North had an aggressive full court press that only allowed Bonham to score one shot, ending first quarter with North leading 4-2. After the slow first quarter, North picked up momentum to put more points on the board. Shelby Shultz led back to back shots with four points and Emma Jez with her steal and ball handling skills got her jump shot in. Klesha Middleton worked aggressively and added four points with the quick rebounds. Ginny Rosenbaum and Layla Omisola each added a basket. Final score for North’s 7B win, 20-6. 7B is now 5-0 in District Play. Next game will be Thursday January 17, 2019 at Home against Midway. Thank you for supporting Girl’s Athletics.
