Thursday, January 10th the Lake Belton Lady Tigers played South Belton Middle School at home for the first basketball game of the new year. It was a great night as that Belton rivalry heated up, but a lot of fun was had between friends.
7th grade B team played hard and fought until the very end but South Belton’s speed could not be stopped. Coach Fowler had a tough set team that Coach Payne’s girls just were not ready for. Lake made a lot of improvements in that game as they played hard, hustled until the end, and their aggressive side came out. Dionne Muchena was player of the game for her hustle and defense. Along with Scarlett Finch for playing with aggressiveness on both sides of the ball, and being an all around team player.
8th grade B team had a great night, with a fun competitive roll all the way through the game. The game started out a pretty even pace for both teams, however Lake was able to pull through at the very end. Rene Jackson was on a roll as she continued to get up for rebounds and put the ball in the basket. Lake was up 17-5 at the half after having a consistent scoring run for most of the 2nd quarter. Unfortunately for South they just could not make up the difference as Lake continued the momentum throughout the rest of the game. Lake took home the win with Kaylee Rodriguez and Madison White as players of the game for their hustle and aggressive play under the basket.
7th grade A team had a tough night as they fought but were unable to shut down South’s girls. Pushing all the way through the game we saw several of Lake Belton’s girls make major improvements in their game. Yuliana Reyes Guerrero played hard on both sides of the ball with 8 of the 10 points that Lake Belton scored. Aijah Bailey-Ray and Austin Inman played some solid defense, really making South work for their points.
8th grade A team closed out the night with a sweep for 8th grade. Jalynn Calloway came out strong despite some previous injuries from before break. Lake kept the ball moving and continued to make smart plays despite South’s aggressiveness. South Belton came out ready to play in the 1st quarter closing it out at 7-4, Lake was behind after missing some shots at the line. However in the second quarter Lake found their momentum and brought the heat, shutting out South for a no point quarter and scoring 11 points on their own, making it 15-7 in favor of Lake. South was defeated after halftime, unable to make up the points difference, and Lake ran away with the game, closing out the night at 23-19. Jalynn Calloway had several points, coming out with 8 of 23 for Lake. Daniela Zarinana put up the sole 3 pointer of the game, and Allie Angell had several assists under the basket as well.
All in all it was a good night for the Lake Belton Lady Tigers as they worked hard coming back off a break, and made some major improvements in their game. Catch them next week as they play Lamar at home on January 17th.
