NBMS Girl’s Basketball traveled to Lamar Middle School on Thursday 1.24.19. All four squads dominated the court with winning scores of 7A: 47-11, 7B: 33-4, 8A: 42-21, 8B: 38-4.
7B started the heat in the Lamar gym with their dominating win 33-4. North game began with gaining control of the tip and powered forward strong. North led an aggressive offense and half-court defense with Ava Navarro scoring two lay-ups within the first minute of the game. Energetic plays and the flow of teamwork progressed through each quarter. Genesis Vargas-Reyes led the night with 13 points, three steals and four rebounds. Second leading scorer was Klesha Middleton-Reed with six points, four steals, and six rebounds. Leilani Eblacas contributed with seven assists, five steals and a perfectly timed jump shot.
7A team followed after 7B and rolled over Lamar winning 47 to 11. With a slow start, the Tiger’s pulled together out scoring the Bulldogs in every quarter. Macey Weber led all scorers with twenty-four points. Angelina DeLeon pitched in with seven points followed by Ella Wheeless with six. North’s defensive effort dominated Lamar’s offense leaving them scoreless in the fourth quarter. Macey Weber also led the team in rebounds and tied Ella Wheeless in steals, both with seven.
8B followed 7B’s winning ways and took down Lamar 38-4. The first quarter started off all North as Stevie Blaha, Samantha Grimaldo, Raven Dupree and Trinity Fly all found the basket. North’s defense would shut out Lamar in the first quarter as North led 13-0. Lamar would only get one basket in the second, but North was just getting started as Mary Hayes would score eight of her team high 12 points in the second. Dupree would add four more to her totals. North led 25-2 at the half. In the third, Blaha would score the lone basket for North but Dupree and Skylar Curry would drop in three free throws combined. Lamar would score their last basket in the third to give North the lead, 30-4, heading in the fourth quarter. In the fourth, North would shut down Lamar again and would find more scoring for themselves. Hayes would add four more points and Elana Tucker would add a break away layup. Grimaldo would drop two free throws to give North the final score of 38-4. Leading scorer was Hayes with 12 points. Dupree added 10 points (2-4 FT). Blaha, Fly and Grimaldo each scored four points. Curry added two points (2-2 FT).
8A finished the night off with the final game of the four game sweep by beating Lamar 42-21. The first quarter started off with Lamar getting the first basket but North would quickly answer with Sydni Cartwright scoring a fast break layup. Cartwright would add three more driving lay ups to extend North’s lead to 10-2. Lamar would grab another basket before Madison Lux would drive the lane and pick up an and-one. The successful free throw try gave North the 13-4 lead after the first. In the second, Lux continued to own the paint and would add three post scores to her totals. Lamar would add a basket and three free throws, but North contained their offense. Alina Tavernier would drain a three pointer off of a drive and dish from Reagan Furney. Elaina Herrera found the basket on a back side jump shot and Cartwright would also add a free throw to North’s totals. North held a 25-9 halftime lead. Out of the half, North would continue to run the floor and find open teammates as Lux would cash in three more baskets on fast break lay ups. North would limit Lamar’s offense to two baskets in the quarter. North led after the third, 33-13. In the fourth, North continued to pass ahead of the defense and score on multiple fast break opportunities. Danica Bingham and Elaina Herrera dropped two fast break buckets each. Lux would score the last point for North with a free throw. Leading scorer was Lux with 16 points (2-4 FT). Cartwright added nine points (1-6 FT) and Herrera scored six. Tavernier dropped five points and Bingham added four points. Layloni Watson scored two points but led North in defensive pressure and rebounding. Paige Roehl frustrated the back court of Lamar, forcing multiple turnovers. Aubree Griggs and Abagayle Cotham played great defense and pressured Lamar’s defense to allow for the open baskets. Reagan Furney led the team in assists, executing the pick and roll to perfection on multiple occasions.
North Girl’s Basketball will complete their last district play next Thursday January 31, 2019 as they travel on the road to take on Copperas Cove. Thank you for supporting Girl’s Athletics.
