Disciplined plate approaches and patience were two of the goals of the day for the Belton Lady Tigers, as they took on the Ellison Lady Eagles Monday afternoon in Killeen.
Belton batted through the lineup twice in four innings and took advantage of 11 hits, as well as 16 walks, and two hit batters on their way to a 20-0, four-inning win over the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Tigers are now 6-0 District 12-6A play and 17-5 overall, having outscored their last three opponents by a score of 67-1 in 12 innings.
Avery Drake started the game with a walk against Ellison starter KD Trimble, two stolen bases, and scored on Miranda Davila’s suicide squeeze bunt single. Davila stole two bases and scored on Caleigh Robinson’s ground out to put Belton up 2-0.
After a single by Paige Nunes, walk to Madison Ward, and single by Maddison Parker, Harley Staton drilled a two-run single to double the lead to 4-0. Maddison Parker then stole home plate and Staton scored on a wild pitch to up the lead to 6-0.
Hannah Kelley got the start and a bizarre safe call at first base on throw that beat Andrea Lopez to the bag at first was the only blemish on the pitching docket. It was ruled a single, followed by a walk Sami Gutierrez. Moments later, Nunes fired a throw down to Robinson at first to pick off Gutierrez.
Trimble was relieved by Lopez. Robinson and Nunes reached on walks and moved up a base on a passed ball. Robinson scored on Ward’s sacrifice fly and Nunes scored on a bases-loaded walk to Izzy Gutierrez. Drake hit a two-run single to score Staton and Payton Cook to lift the Lady Tigers to a 10-0 lead.
After Kelley struck out the side in the second inning, the Lady Tigers struck again in the third. Paige Nunes greeted Trimble, who re-entered the circle, with a first-pitch solo homer over the centerfield fence. After Ward was hit by a pitch, Maddison Parker belted a two-run shot over the left centerfield fence to make the score 13-0. On the next pitch, Staton doubled to left field. Drake reached on a walk, and Davila singled Staton. Robinson walked to force home Gutierrez. Nunes walked to force home Drake and Belton lead 17-0.
Following another 1-2-3 inning, the Lady Tigers three more times in the fourth.
After two walks loaded the bases, Davila hit a fly ball to shortstop that fell under the infield fly rule for an out. Bailey Bark dropped the ball and Cook sprinted home for another run. Robinson was hit by a pitch and Nunes singled home Bethany Sherwood and Avery Drake.
Kelley rounded out the out with a pair of strikeouts, as she earned her sixth win of the season. She allowed one hit, one walk, and struck out eight.
Nunes went 3-of-3 with a homer and four RBI to pace the Lady Tigers. Maddison Parker, Davila, and Staton each had two hits. Avery Drake, Davila, Robinson, Maddison Parker and Staton each had two runs batted in, as the Lady Tigers stranded nine batters in four innings.
Belton will take on Waco at 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
