On Friday, October 4, the volleyball teams of South Belton Middle School traveled to North Belton Middle School to participate in the annual Belton tournament. With the games on our court running slightly behind, the A team was anxious and ready to play Bonham.
This game against Bonham was tight the whole time. Even though we lost of the first set, Akina Gonzalez had some great saves as our setter and Kimberlyn Wigginton did awesome as an outside hitter. Going into the second set, the team was ready to fight and play hard. They worked as a team, played hard, got great passes and set up lots of great volleys. All of this, combined with staying positive, the team made a fantastic comeback to win the second set and force the game to a third! Staying fired up, the girls quickly got mentally prepared to play a fast and furious third set to only 15 points to win the game. The girls played strong, but I think their nerves got the best of them and were unable to return Bonham’s serves and ultimately lost the game with a score of 11-15 in the third set. Special shoutout to Gwen Leinart who got 2 serves over the net!
Waking up early Saturday morning, the girls came bright and early and ready to face Lampasses at 8am. The team was motivated to play as good as they did the night before, but started off a little rocky. After a brief timeout, the girls were able to get their heads in the game and settle down enough to gain some points back on Lampasses. Unfortunately, the girls played well, but the team fell just short of victory by losing the first 2 sets and ending their participation in the tournament.
Overall, the girls played extremely well. Quite possibly the best volleyball they have played since the season started. They have shown tremendous progress and I am so proud of their continuous efforts.
