In what could only be described as the definition of grit and will, the JV girls roared back in the 4th quarter before falling to Midway by 2, 59-57 in OT. The first half was mired by fouls on both teams as the game slowed to a snail’s pace. At the half, Belton trailed Midway 21-16.
Midway came out of the half and outscored Belton 19-9, and extended their lead to 16 going into the 4th. That is when a level of fight and belief was shown by Belton. A few adjustments were made and the girls came out and forced their will on Midway and outscored the 25-9 in the 4th to take the game into OT tied at 49.
In OT, Midway scored the first 4 points before Belton answered with a bucket by Zanyra Adams. Midway would make 3 of 5 free throws and Adams would add another bucket to give Midway a 58-55 lead with about a minute to play. Both teams traded missed baskets when Belton would get the ball with 20 secs to play. Jaylynn Callaway sliced through the Midway defense to score and cut the score to 1 with about 12 secs to play. Belton called a timeout and were forced to foul leaving 7 seconds on the clock with Midway shooting 2 FTs. The first one was made but the second one was missed and rebounded by Mya Matulik who hit Adams on a pass at mid court and drove into the paint before getting a 10 foot shot that would hit the back of the rim and bounce around and out as the game ended 59-57.
Leading the team was Zanyra Adams with 19 points, Jalynn Callaway with 17 points, Deashune Little with 7 points, Mya Matulik and Jaz’ria Gossett with 5 points each.
A’naya Brown Sydni Cartwright and Madison Lux all contributed on the boards and on defense.
The girls will travel to Copperas Cove on Tuesday and Harker Heights on Friday of this coming week.
