Belton Red played an intense home game against Waco Midway Friday night. The Tigers started the game with energy and determination. Their willingness to compete was unmatched by the talented Midway team. Midway led the Tigers 11-7 in the first quarter by scoring quick transition points and shooting two for two from the three point line. Even though the Pantherettes started off strong, the Lady Tigers’ tenacity on the defensive end turned their aggressive defense into an effective offense.
The Lady Tigers dominated the second quarter, out scoring the Patherettes fifteen to five. Belton Red capitalized on the tired Midway defense by using their unselfish play to their advantage. Ending the first half twenty-two to sixteen.
After some half-time adjustments, the Lady Tigers were able to stop dribble penetration. However, the Midway offense capitalized from the three point line scoring six points from the three and an additional three from the free throw line. Belton held a small lead of 25 to 24 to start the fourth quarter.
Belton out hustled the Patherettes in the fourth quarter by scoring fourteen points to Midway’s nine. The players gave full and total effort on defense and scored all of their fourth quarter points in transition.
Ten players scored on the Red team showing their offensive versatility. Roz Leibowitz led all Belton scorers with eight points, followed by Isabella Hinds with seven, Bella Bustos-McDaniel and Trinity Fly chipped in five points a piece, and Jade Rivera added four points. Elaina Herrera, Shaune Little, Trinity Espitia, Rebecca Bledsoe, and Jasmine Mitchell all contributed two points to the Tigers total making it a complete team win.
The Tigers are now 5-3 in district and will play away at Copperas Cove on Tuesday.
