On Monday, February 10, 2020 the South Belton Lady Tigers basketball teams traveled to Lamar Middle School in Temple for our very last game of the season. With second place on the line, the 7th grade ‘B’ team was more determined than ever to get a victory. The girls came out with a strong defense. They struggled to run their new offensive play against Lamar’s man defense but were still able to outscore them 8-2 in the first quarter. Hailey Staley, Sara Haake, Lexani Palacios, and Kiersten Rowland each scored a basket.
With a new five on the court in the second quarter, they kept the momentum going on defense, but Lamar’s man defense got even tighter and we couldn’t seem to protect the ball. Both teams scored 4 points before halftime, but South still had the lead 12-6 at the break.
During the third quarter, we really put the pressure on Lamar and ran our offense the way we wanted to. The girls had great passing and moving, leading to lots of shots on goal and baskets from Rowland, Palacios, Isa Rivera-Munoz, Haake, and Jacklyn Munoz. Lamar only put 2 points on the board.
With a little cushion during the fourth, we slowed down the pace of the game and focused on controlling our passing. Jacklyn Munoz scored four more points from the team from four free throws. Very impressive! With a final score of 26-8, the South Belton Lady Tigers successfully secured their 2nd place in district!
Throughout the season, the girls worked extremely hard each and every day, game, and practice. The coaches are endlessly proud of their teamwork, dedication, heart, and improvement they displayed.
