Girls Varsity Powerlifting · Lady Tigers Sending Three Lifters to State

The Lady Tiger Powerlifting Team competed against some of the best lifters in the state on Saturday at the Region 2, Division 1 Meet in Del Valle.  As always, the stakes were high and emotions were all over the place.  Regular season lifting totals are what qualified the girls to compete at Regionals, but when it comes to earning a bid to compete at state, the only thing that matters is how you do at the regional meet.  As has become the norm in recent years, the Lady Tigers brought one of largest teams to the meet, with 14 lifters qualified to compete.

Three Lady Tigers emerged from the day’s competition as both fourth place medalists and state qualifiers.  Senior Diamond Davis qualified for the state meet by exceeding the 114 weight class qualifying total.  She finished the day with a combined total of 680 lbs., which exceeded her previous PR by 40 lbs.  Junior Stephanny Ruiz qualified for State by finishing as the second place 6A lifter in the 132 weight class, with a combined total of 740 lbs. lifted on the day.  Senior and team captain Rylee Pratt also qualified by finishing as a second place 6A lifter (181 weight class) with a combined total of 830 lbs.

Several other lifters had outstanding performances but missed out on qualifying for the state meet.  Team captain Kyndall Carroll (165), Gracie Martone (97), Alyssa Diaz (114), Selena Giron (114), Kassondra Bengston (132), Maya Jones (148), Bryce Bourland (198), Bethany Sherwood (220), and Marryah Smith McCarthy (259) all equaled or exceeded previous PRs for combined weight lifted.  Sadie Rhoder (181) and Raquelle Chandarlis (123) also competed hard for the Lady Tigers on Saturday but weren’t able to meet or exceed previous totals.  Each of these ladies fought extremely hard throughout the meet and exemplified our “Tiger Strong” slogan.  Many of the lifters who competed on Saturday are underclassmen or first-time lifters, so we are very excited about the future of Lady Tiger Powerlifting.  First things first though, as we can’t wait to watch Diamond, Stephanny, and Rylee compete at the state meet on Saturday, March 21 at the Extraco Event Center in Waco!
