MENTAL TRAINING

Athletes train their bodies regularly by weight training, running and practicing and then use all these tools as a way to have success in their given sport. However, training yourself mentally is just as important as training yourself physically.  Most high school athletes dream of one day being able to play their sport at the next level or have a successful career apart from sports.  Do you know what it takes to make that dream a reality?

Napoleon Hill stated “Desire is the starting point of all achievement.” Any athlete that wants to take it to the next level has to have a burning desire to be better.  Micheal Jordan was told in his early years that he would have to mentally and physically work harder than anyone else if he wanted to be the best. His desire to succeed helped him to become laser focused on his goals and, in turn, pushed him to work harder and longer than anyone else on his team.  This desire made him the greatest basketball player of all time.

The desire, push and focus that you develop while participating in high school athletics can also be crucial after you graduate and move on to a career.  Research shows that people who play high school sports get better jobs, reports The New York Times. The lessons learned in athletics, combined with the knowledge that student-athletes must do well in school to participate motivates their persistence and drive for success (2018, Scripps Media, Inc.)  No matter what path you choose to take, you can mentally train yourself now to prepare and set goals to be the best.

There are three questions all athletes should ask themselves if they truly want to be great.  What is your desire? What are you willing to give up for what you desire? What are you going to do to make that desire a reality?  If an athlete can answer these and follow through, the chances of becoming what they desire increases.  Those that can answer but don’t follow through will ask “what if” for the rest of their lives.
